I Hid Under Tables

I Hid Under TablesBy Leslie Sturgeon, WIW Founder

It was the 1970’s.

It was a simple time with good music, groovy clothing, tight-knit families and shag carpet.

It was also the time period in which I hid under the kitchen table or could be found clinging to my mother because of overwhelming shyness.

Yup, the person you see today was painfully shy. Hard to believe I could go from full-blown social anxiety to speaking in front of 600 people and being comfortable networking in a crowd.

What changed? My mindset. That combined with a willingness to acknowledge my issues and a commitment to venture out of my comfort zone.  Even at a young age I knew that I needed and wanted to change. I spent the next 40 years becoming who I am today. That isn’t to say that negative thoughts, self-doubt, and a belly full of nervous butterflies don’t happen from time to time, they do. But I now have tools to change my mindset, not to mention strategies for kicking myself in the tush when I need it.

That is why this month’s event with Michelle Wilson is so important to me, and I hope to you as well. Any change or personal growth begins with changing our mindset. As Henry Ford said, “If you think you can, or you think you can’t – you are right.” In my career I have been fortunate to meet thousands of women. Two things consistently come up – how to handle all the chaos and commitments in our life and how to identify and achieve all our goals.  And what do the two things have in common? MINDSET. Of course there are other factors such as self-management, etc. but it all starts with how we think about things. And no one is better to help us understand this than Michelle Wilson.

Even now at 49 years old, there are days I want to hide under the table again or cling to my mother’s leg. Gets kind of embarrassing when I do that out in public, so obviously I still have things to work on! I look forward to receiving new strategies from Michelle as I continue to evolve as a person and professional. We’re all in this together, girlfriend. Can you join me at the event on April 13th? xoxo

  1. Thoughts create reality and, Leslie, your thoughts and dreams have become a realistic benefit to anyone involved with WIW. My guess is many of them still find they wish they had a leg to cling to on occasion! I was too tall to hide under the table but there are days I still wish I could hide under the covers!! I am blessed to have you in my life and your inspiration is a benefit!!

Oh Judi – your note got me all misty. We had a big table with only 4 of us sitting around it unlike your table with 6 so there was some room 🙂 Can you picture me now at 5’10 crawling under there or clinging to Mom’s leg (who is 5’2″ish for those who don’t know her). You are one of those people who helped me become who I am today – I love and appreciate you!
